National Day Calendar: The Biggest Fun Holidays, Month by Month

Hundreds of unofficial holidays crowd the calendar, but only some are worth planning around. This is our editor's cut: the fun days per month with real cultural momentum โ€” the ones people actually post about, bake for, and celebrate.

January

World Introvert Day (Jan 2) โ€” permission to cancel plans, granted the day after the year's most exhausting party. National Hugging Day (Jan 21) and Opposite Day (Jan 25) round out a month that's kinder than its reputation.

February

World Nutella Day (Feb 5) and National Pizza Day (Feb 9) lead the food front; Random Acts of Kindness Day (Feb 17) is the month's feel-good anchor beyond Valentine's.

March

Pi Day (Mar 14) โ€” the geek holiday that went mainstream, celebrated with actual pie since 1988. World Sleep Day (mid-March) and International Waffle Day (Mar 25) keep the month cozy.

April

April Fools' (Apr 1) needs no introduction. World Party Day (Apr 3) asks what would happen if everyone threw a party at once, and National Pretzel Day (Apr 26) earns its TV fame.

May

Star Wars Day (May 4) โ€” the pun that built a global holiday. Cinco de Mayo (May 5) follows immediately, and World Bee Day (May 20) gives the month genuine purpose (and honey).

June

World Environment Day (Jun 5) and World Oceans Day (Jun 8) are June's serious side; International Sushi Day (Jun 18) and World Sunglasses Day (Jun 27) are its sunny one.

July

World Chocolate Day (Jul 7) is the summer's biggest treat day, World Emoji Day (Jul 17) is the holiday whose date is written on its own icon ๐Ÿ“…, and National Ice Cream Day (third Sunday) closes the loop.

August

International Cat Day (Aug 8) โ€” see our full guide. Watermelon Day (Aug 3) and Banana Split Day (Aug 25) handle dessert.

September

Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sep 19) โ€” an inside joke between two friends that columnist Dave Barry accidentally turned into a global event in 2002. International Day of Peace (Sep 21) brings the month back to earth.

October

International Coffee Day (Oct 1) opens the month, Mad Hatter Day (Oct 6) celebrates the "In this style 10/6" hat card, World Pasta Day (Oct 25) feeds it, and Halloween ends it.

November

World Kindness Day (Nov 13) is the month's heart; National Sandwich Day (Nov 3) its lunch. World Hello Day (Nov 21) asks you to greet ten people โ€” harder than it sounds.

December

Beyond the big ones: National Cookie Day (Dec 4) conveniently opens baking season, and Bacon Day (Dec 30) is strategically placed one day before resolutions begin.
