Holidays That Change Date Every Year: 2026, 2027 and 2028 Dates
Most holidays sit on the same date every year. Some don’t: they follow a weekday, another holiday, the sky, or an announcement from their organizers. Here are the rules for all 51 moving holidays on the Fun Calendar, and their dates for 2026, 2027 and 2028.
Which holidays change date each year?
Thanksgiving, Easter, Black Friday and many bank holidays move because their dates follow weekdays, another holiday or a calendar rule. In 2026, US Thanksgiving is November 26; in 2027 it is November 25; in 2028 it is November 23.

A weekday in a month
The most common rule. Thanksgiving in the US is the fourth Thursday of November. World Laughter Day, started in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, is the first Sunday of May. International Beer Day is the first Friday of August, and many bank holidays in the UK and Ireland are Mondays for the same reason: a long weekend matters more than a fixed date.
A few days after another holiday
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and Small Business Saturday the day after that. Neither can be pinned to “the fourth Friday”: in a year when November starts on a Friday, the fourth Friday comes before Thanksgiving.
The sky
The equinoxes and solstices happen at a precise moment, so their calendar date depends on the year and on the time zone. Fun Calendar uses UTC. Easter-based holidays such as Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day and Whit Monday follow Easter, which in Western churches falls on the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21.
An announcement
National Walk & Roll to School Day in the US has no fixed rule at all. Its organizers publish the date each year, and the calendar follows their list.
Why Thanksgiving moves
For most of its history Thanksgiving was the last Thursday of November. In 1939 that Thursday was November 30, and Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday a week earlier to give stores a longer shopping season. States split between the two dates, and critics called the early one “Franksgiving”. In 1941 Congress settled it: the fourth Thursday of November, which can fall anywhere from November 22 to November 28. In 2026 it is November 26.
