Dates to know in November 2026
Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. In the United States it falls on the fourth Thursday of November, a rule Congress wrote into law in 1941 after Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday a week earlier in 1939. This year it shares the date with National Cake Day, which seems fair.
Black Friday is November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Small Business Saturday follows on November 28. American Express started it in 2010 to send holiday shoppers to local stores, and it has kept the Saturday after Thanksgiving ever since.
Mexico’s Revolution Day holiday is observed on the third Monday of November, November 16 this year. Ukraine’s Holodomor Remembrance Day is the fourth Saturday, November 28.
Six fun days worth planning for
Sandwich Day, November 3
The sandwich carries the name of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, and November 3 is its day. Build one you have never tried, or settle an argument about whether a hot dog counts.
Marie Curie's Birthday, November 7
Marie Curie was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, and became the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences: physics in 1903 and chemistry in 1911. A good day to read about her, or to visit a science museum.
World Kindness Day, November 13
The World Kindness Movement introduced the day in 1998. The idea is simple enough to do before lunch: one deliberate kind act for someone who does not expect it.
Mickey Mouse Day, November 18
Steamboat Willie premiered in New York on November 18, 1928, and Disney counts that screening as Mickey’s birthday. Watch the original short; it runs under eight minutes.
World Hello Day, November 21
World Hello Day began in 1973 as a small response to conflict: greet ten people and, the thinking goes, communication beats silence. Say hello to someone you usually walk past.
Fibonacci Day, November 23
Written the American way, November 23 is 11/23: one, one, two, three, the start of the Fibonacci sequence. Five days later, Red Planet Day, November 28 marks the launch of Mariner 4 on November 28, 1964, the spacecraft that made the first successful flyby of Mars.
Days for remembering
November also holds some of the year’s quietest days. All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead open the month. Veterans Day falls on the anniversary of the 1918 armistice, and November 9 marks the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
